Question:

As I was going through the life history of Ramakrishna in "GURUDEVA SRI RAMAKRISHNA". I observed that he has adopted the "sadhana marga" by Bhairavi Bhramani. I think he could have adopt some other way like other saints to reach his goal. So my quetsion is "why sadhana marg? why not other way to reach MAA KALI?

I will be expecting for an answer in mail as specified.

Thank you.

Answer:

Namaste.

We are happy to know that you are studying the life of Sri Ramakrishna and trying to understand his great life.

Sri Ramakrishna had the Vision of Mother Kali just by sheer prayer and strong desire to have Her Vision. He reached Mother Kali without practicing any sadhana in particular.

He practiced sadhana marga under the guidance of Bhairavi Bhramani in later days. The reason for this sadhana is not to reach Mother kali. Because He already had Her Vision and able to see Her daily at all moments like a child sees his mother all the time.

Then the reason for this spiritual practice is, as he himself describes, that he want to test "whether all the spiritual paths described the Scriptures are valid paths or not?" In West Bengal, The Tantra Marga, is very famous and every one was practicing it. Sri Ramakrishna also practiced that path in a "very pure way". Though that particular path involves the usage of "liquor" and other things, he did not use them while practicing that particular path. By doing so, he certified that the Tantra Marga, which was misused by lower level seekers, if followed in a pure way, will certainly lead to the vision of Universal Mother.

Like this he followed many spiritual margas, like Vaishnava Marga, Vedanta Marga, etc. He even practiced Islam under a Sufi saint. He had the vision of Jesus Christ. All these sadhanas and its visions are made Him to declare that "All spiritual paths, if practiced with a pure character, will lead to the vision of God". Here the criteria are purity of mind and the strong desire to have the vision of the Lord. You can worship him through any path and choose any aspect of the Lord.

It is very difficult to understand the Great Lives, unless we have a proper guidance and proper attitude. For further clarification and guidance you are welcome to our Math and meet sadhus.

While wishing you for the right understanding of the lives of Great Ones, we pray for your spiritual growth and general wellbeing,

Yours in service,

Question: Sir, I am a student and studying the Vedic Literature daily. I have one question that.

Penances for the various sins given in different Vedic Literature like if you do this sin then you shoud do this vrata etc. Is it not the temporary solution for personal satisfication ? Or it realy works?

Answer: I am happy to know that you are a student of Vedas.

Eyes are the pramana (Instrument of Knowledge) which operates in the field of forms and colours. Similarly, Ears with regard to the sound, skin with regard to the touch, etc.

Each Pramana works in its own field and therefore it is invalid with regard to other fields. You can't check the sound through eyes. Nor the forms can be checked through the ears. Therefore whatever is revealed by that particular Pramana - instrument of Knowledge - is taken as final Knowledge. Each sense organ is unique in its own sphere and therefore only they are called Pramana for that field. These 5 sense organs can operate only in the fields of 5 sense objects like sound, form, taste etc. through which human mind receives the knowledge about this tangible sensory world.

I hope, that as a Vedic Student you might be aware that the Veda is a Pramana (Instrument of Knowledge) which operates in the field of ‘unseen and unknowable’ things. Vedas reveal to us about the existence of God, Atman, Swarga, Naraka, Papa (sin), Punya (merit), etc. The ordinary 5 sense organs cannot reveal anything about these subjects. Neither can we verify this revelation through the 5 sense organs nor can we disprove this revelation. Because, sense organs don’t have any access to these subjects.

It is like; knowledge of forms can neither be verified by any other sense organ other than eyes. Because, other sense organs don’t have any access in the field of ‘forms and colours’. If I have eyes I will agree with that knowledge. If I don’t have eyes the whole world with forms and colours are absent for me.

So let us come to our topic, whether the ‘Prayaschitta Karma’ (purificatory rituals which are mentioned in the Vedas to wash off the sins committed by a human being) are valid or not? A Vedic student who considers Vedas as a Pramana, for him they are all valid and are facts. Whereas, it is a mere superstition, for a lay man who does not agree that the Vedas are Pramana (Instrument of Knowledge) which operates in the field of ‘unseen and unknowable’ things.

So our conclusion is, you, being a vedic student, should have complete faith in Vedic teachings. But, whenever you come across any contradictions in these teachings, you should approach your teacher or any Vaidika (who leads the Vedic way of life) for clarification. Our Traditional Acharyas have proved that there is no contradiction in the teachings of Veda and Vedanta. The whole aim of Vedas is to teach ‘how to manifest our innate spiritual Nature’. There are, many stages in that spiritual journey, and there many types of seekers also. Vedas address all type of seekers and therefore It will have many types of teachings.

So, study the Vedas with full faith in its validity. Purity of mind and austerity are the main factors which determine our understanding capacity. Have them and follow as far as possible in your life. Your life will be blessed and purposeful.

For more clarifications and deep understanding, you can come to Math and meet us.

With prayers for your well being,

Question: Please help me in clarifying my doubt. I really donot know whether to believe god or not to believe? When everybody says that god's love is unconditional and if we ask for forgiveness for our miskates he forgives even the greatest & greatest sins.If this is true then why did Lord Shiva punish/curse his own son Lord Ganapathi for no mistake of his? Mother Parvathi asks her son (lord Ganapathi) to guard her & goes to take bath and she orders him not to send anybody inside who so ever it is unless she calls Ganapathi. Then Lord Shiva comes & he asks Ganapathi to let him go inside which Ganapathi denies so Shiva becomes furious and cuts his head. Please let me know if what Ganapathi did was wrong? He was only following the orders of his mother infact Lord Shiva being antaryami should have knew why Ganapathi is not letting him go inside? When we see or hear this things a normal human being like me will we not get scared about god? When god punished Ganapathi for no mistake of his atall then will he spare us when we have commited so many mistakes?

Also those days saints were also worshipped as god's for example. Saint Vishwamitra does the same thing with his wife. Vishwamitra asks his wife to get water from the pond for puja and sits for meditation. As her husband's order she goes to pond to get water. While getting water some sexual thoughts comes to her mind which is quite natural because human mind wanders. Just because of this Vishwamitra becomes furious & orders his son to cut his mother's head.

We can even take an example of Ahalya devi. Her husband curses her & she becomes stone for a small mistake. I have many more doubt like this in my mind about god. I donot know how to put complete faith on him. I have even heard that there is no particular form as such about god. All these forms (like Shiva, Krishan etc) are created by human beings because in this material life people need some idol to worship. Actually when we talk about god it is a holy spirit not any form.

The reason why I am asking this question is because one day I was thinking that I have commited so many mistakes so god is definately going to punish me I might become tree in my next birth and might continue being as a tree for 400 years.

Please help me I just want to lead a normal life, but currently I without peace of mind and I am literally dying everyday.

Awaiting your reply. Please request you to get back to me ASAP.

Answer:

Respected Mother, Namaste. If we remember correctly, that you have come to our Math and talked to our sadhus. But unfortunately your doubts and problems still exist. Yours questions are not based on facts and misunderstood one.

Ganapathi was given punishment for his arrogance and not for the performance of his duty given by his mother. He could have avoided the anger of Shiva if he would have behaved as an humble son before his father. The moral of this story is “be humble even while you perform your duty”.

Vishwamitra never killed his wife. It was Jamadagni Rishi, father of Parasurama, asked his son to kill Mother Renuka Devi for her grave mistake of losing her chastity by desiring a kinnara.

The punishment (curse to appear “like a stone”) given to Ahalya also was for the same reason -losing the chastity willingly. She knew that the person is not her husband Gautama Rishi but Indra. Because of this curse-in-disguise only she could get the darshan of Sri Ram, who not only purified her, but also considered and revered her as his own mother.

The moral of these stories is “Chastity/Purity/Truthfulness is the highest value for a human being to follow all through the life”. Our Vedic culture and society was very particular about the purity and chastity of life. If a person happens to lose the chastity he was unfit to live in the society/world. This rule was applicable to other yugas like Satya yuga, Treda yuga. In those yugas losing the chastity even by mentally was considered as a sin. The present materialistic society, which is mad after the sense pleasures, can not easily understand and appreciate this great value of Chastity and Purity and being Truthful in life.

At the same time we have to understand the purport of these stories. These are all puranic stories which ‘may’ have some exaggeration along with the moral. To find out the correct meaning of these stories one should have right perspective and attitude. Without guidance, these are all very difficult to understand. So try to avoid these puranic stories which you find difficult to understand. Instead read the life and teachings of Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi, who lead a simple and pure life of devotion and service and who can be the model for all modern women. Read the teachings of Sri Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda which give the essence of all the Vedas and Puranas and which is full of strength and purity. Their teachings will show you the dignity and reality of humanity, that the Human Being is Divne.

Bring out that Divinity by having faith in God, whether you understand Him or not. Pray to Him. It is not an easy thing to understand Him. Sannyasins and Spiritual seekers are dedicating their whole life for this single purpose only. Your faith in God need not be accompanied with the understanding of God. To love and to have faith in your Mother/Father you need not understand their qualification, amount of wealth, power, position etc. Mere dependence and love will do. Similarly, consider the Lord as your mother or father and surrender your life to Him and love Him. He can’t deny anyone. He can’t punish any one. He can’t hate anyone. Human being suffers by their own wrong actions and not by the punishment given by the Lord. These sufferings also are for the sake of purification of our mind only. He is Karunamurthy, an embodiment of love and compassion. He is none other than your own INNERSELF, who is the witness of all your happiness and sufferings, in fact you YOURSELF.

Still if you need any guidance for your spiritual life, we suggest you to come to our math by fixing an appointment with us through mail.

We pray for your spiritual wellbeing and peaceful life,

Yours in service,

Question: I am a post-graduate student, pursuing masters degree at a college. Here, some of the people talk vulgar about girls. Even though these people do not talk directly to me on this issue, but i still feel irritated when i think of these thoughts in isolation. So my question here is should i revolt or should i keep listening to such thoughts without breaking relationships with such people?

Answer: Your email shows your good character. We understand your difficulty to live a clean life, in a society which is mad after the sense pleasures. It is really difficult one.

First Be strong in your good ideals. Have one good idea for the day! Think deeply about that idea. Share that idea with your friends. Try to find friendship with good people. Whenever any body talks about bad, why can't you talk about good? You can talk about Swami Vivekananda, and his ideas. You can talk about the problems facing our life and our country. If we do like this consistently without being irritated and with full conviction in these good ideas, either they will get your good ideas or they will go from you without disturbing you.

I hope this technique will convert your friends as good. Because, by nature all are good. Human being is naturally Divine. He does not know it; therefore, he takes himself only as body and seeks the bodily pleasures. Only we have to invoke their goodness which is their real nature. If you can invoke the divinity in you as well as in your friends, and see, what a noble atmosphere comes in your life!

Swami Vivekananda says, "The world is asleep to the Eternal, the children of the Lord are awake in that realm. These are the sons of God. There is but one way to control the senses--to see Him who is the Reality in the universe. Then and only then can we really conquer our senses."

Try this method consciously. Get conviction that you are a Child of Divinity. Study more and more about this subject. For that you have to read the good books like Life and Teachings of Swami Vivekananda, Mahatma Gandhiji and other noble people. Whenever anybody talks to you bad, you change the topic to these noble ideas.

If you are staying in Bangalore you are welcome to our Classes for Youths conducted in our Ashram (on Sundays 3.30 p.m.)

May the Lord bless you and guide your life, is our prayer to Him.

Wishing you for a good and successful life,

Question: I am sending this email to seek advice on how to overcome the lethargic effect that is prevailent in me. This has been a hurdle since my study days till today. I am just 30 years old. I aspire to do a lot of things such as personal spiritual development, social service etc. But i strongly feel this attitude is a hurdle. I know that this is the "Tamasic" effect which is said in the Gita, is more dangerous than the Rajasic effect. I am making a conscious effort to come out of this. Also does chanting Adi Hridaya or maha sowra(related to Sun god) help in any way? Please advice.

Answer: You are in the right path. Recognition of the disease is the first step to cure the disease. You have recognized the hurdle in your life's journey. Now start rectifying it.

In addition to your day to day duties, keep yourself busy with beneficial and noble things. Read Swami Vivekananda's book (Colombo to Almora, talks with Vivekananda etc.). You will get more inspiration. Also try to keep the association of good and noble people. They will be model and guide to your life.

Prayer is very important for every man. During prayer he is contacting his own Real and Infinite Nature. You can chant any prayer you like. But it should be chanted with concentration, devotion and knowing the meaning. Then the prayer will benefit you more.

Wishing you for the success in your life's pursuits,

With prayers

Question: I am 37 years old woman. My husband and I am initiated disciple. My son is 13 years old and I am working as school teacher. In complete works, Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna and other books, I read that Brahmacharya is very important. Remaining in the house hold how can one keep Brahmacharya? May I keep fast on Ekadashi days?

Answer: It is a wonderful question could be asked only by the devotees of Sri Ramakrishna. "How to keep Brahmacharya remaining as an householder?". Sri Ramakrishna himself showed the way to this question. "After the birth of one or two children the householder can live as brothers and sisters". He said.

Since both of you are devotees and blessed with the great mantra of our Sri sri Thakur you can try. But both should try together. Pray to the Lord for his blessings and strength to lead the spiritual life more and more.

But please keep in mind that any trial will have falling and disappointments. If you are sincere, your spiritual Ideal the Lord will help you and transform your spiritual life.

Regarding the Ekadashi fasting you can happy follow. If will do good to our spiritual life.

With prayers for your spiritual wellbeing, Yours in service.

Question: I have become very pessimistic and always get bad thoughts. I was not like this before. Now even if I watch any tv serial of pain I start thinking to myself what if i face the same problem? I dont get proper sleep in the night as i get bad thoughts. I always get scared of any small thing. I always get these kind of thoughts that my loved ones will be away from me? i want to be strong as this is really effecting me a lot mentally. Pls help me.

Answer: In Bhagavat Gita the Lord says that there are 5 factors deciding a thing to happen.

1.Past Karma

2.Strong Desire

3.Repeated thinking

4.Action (to achieve that desire)

5. Lord's Grace.

In your case none of the above mentioned factors are involved. So please don't bother yourself for the fantasies of the mind. Our mind is generally silly. We have to strengthen it by prayer, reading good books (like Swami vivekananda's literatures) and good action. Anything which makes us week and unhappy we should try to avoid. Divert your mind to the positive things of the life.

Pray to the Lord to give you the wisdom and strength to lead a purposeful life. Lead this life in a very purposeful way by dedicating yourself to the Lord and serving his children (who are poor and needy) by giving your knowledge, time, love etc.

Read the life of Sri Saradadevi. Your life will be with clarity of thinking and purposeful.

If you happen to live in Bangalore, you are welcome to our Math (timings 9 a.m. to 12 noon & 4p.m. to 7 p.m.) and get guidance from the elderly monks.

With prayers.

Question: I am 27 year old i am daily doing hasthmaithun i am not able control this. When i made hasthmaithun i got nervousness .I am upset that entire day. I want to stay in brhamachrya i am very upset what is the way to control of my sex activity how to avoid this activity? I am preparing an Exam but i failed 6 times. I want pass gurugi please advise me how to study and how to remember what i red.

Answer: Our observation is that you are killing yourself slowly. If you want to lead human life really then stop this bad habit immediately and pray to the Lord to give you enough strength to come out of this weakness.

Read Swami vivekananda's book and pray to Him. Keep his photo on your bed. Pray to Him before going to sleep.

Only Lord can help you. Unless you have the self-control there is no use in getting any degree in the world. Mere degrees can't make our life happy. Try to lead a new life with values and character. Then you will get enough strength to pursue your studies also well.

We pray for your welfare.

P.S.: If possible, go to any Ashrama and meet a Monk and get guidance. If you are in Bangalore then you can visit our Ashrama.

Question: My son is studing in 1 std, he is writing very slowly in class, and he doesn't finish classwork. what is problem and how to improw his consentretion?

Answer: We suggest you to do regular pujas in your home daily both morning and evening. The puja may be a simple one with Arati and chanting of some stotras etc. Please see that your child also to join in that puja. Give him some books (pictorials) which deals with Ramayana and Mahabharata stories. Also you can bring him to the Ashrama now and then.

All children are the gift of the Lord. We have to find out their particular interests and encourage them in cultivating good habits and ideas. Other problems will solve by itself. Don't worry. Introduce your child to the Lord. He will take care of your child.

With prayers for your child and all of you, Yours in service,

Question: I am 35 year old single man, who has already taken the initiatic vow of "Deeksha" and accordingly, every morning after bath, I practise "japa-dhyana" with Ishta Mantra and only then, take breakfast and go to Office. However, during this process of "japa-dhyana", I often find that materialistic thoughts (very often, these thoughts reflect profane sight/sound/smell/touch perceived by my senses on the previous days) arises in my mind, leading to lack of continuity in concentraion and hence, devotion on Ishta. Then I have to start again. Also, during the waking hours, impure thoughts some time cross my mind.

Hence, I earnestly and humbly seek your guidance so that I can maintain my spiritual tranquility and "pavitrata". And the valuable answer given by you may be freely published.

Answer: The problem you mentioned in your mail is an universal one.

The solution is consistent practice with faith in the Lord's Grace.

To ignite the fire we may take years. But once it is ignited it will remove the darkness (which exists in many many births in our heart) in a seconds.

Please pray to the Lord to show his beautiful face seeing which you can turn back from the world and its attraction without much struggle. There are no other shortcuts. But as even you struggle to purify your mind He reveals himself to you stage by stage. Please go and get the blessings of your Guru if he is physically alive. Or pray to him to guide you wherever he is.

Followings disciplines in our day to day life will help us:

· Reading the spiritual books (like teachings of Swami Vivekananda/Sri Ramamrksihna etc) daily.

· Satsangh. (we conduct special classes for youths on every Sunday at 3.30 p.m).

· Cultivation of Good Habits/food or avoidance of habits/food/people which may injure our spiritual journey.

· A strong inner decision to lead a spiritual life.

· Constant inner prayer to the Lord to protect your pavitrata and to guide you in your day to day activities.

· Fixed schedule (Daily routine) for whatever we do regularly.

· Fixed hours for morning and evening prayer.

Above all if we really want to be spiritual we will be. Don't worry and struggle continuously. The very struggle is worth and will give us the peace and tranquility of our mind.

Wishing you the success in your noble endevour, we welcome you to our Math for Satsangh.

Question: i am 29 yrs old.presently i live in the US with my husband and son.even before committing to marriage i had intense call for leading a spiritual life...now every day it becomes stronger...the only reason holding back me is my baby.but this iam unable to resist

my Q is it possible for a woman to join the math? what are the procedures?

plz guide me.

Answer: Ramakrishna Math is a monastic organization wherein male sannyasins are living. For women there is a separate organization called Sri Sarada Math. To join in these monastic organization the spiritual seeker must be unmarried and should not have any debt in their family.

From your mail we come to know that you are mother of a child. So you can't join in Sri Sarada Math. To lead spiritual life one need not become a sannyasin. As a householder you can lead the spiritual life provided if you have surrendered to the Lord and made your life style conducive to your spiritual practices.

Please read the lives of Sri Ramakrishna and Sri Saradadevi and the lives of householder disciples of Sri Ramakrishna. You will get guidance for your quest.

You can visit any of our Vedanta Centres in US. Please click this link to know the places wherein our vedanta centres are available. http://www.belurmath.org/centres/branchcentres.htm#UNITED_STATES_OF_AMERICA

While praying for your spiritual growth and peace & prosperity.

Question: I need your help in clarifying my doubt. Recently (may be last week) while crossing in front of the temple one thought came to my that I will become tree in my next birth. The moment I said this or thought about this the bell rang in the temple now I am very scared that it is confirmed that I will become tree in my next birth.

The reason for thinking like this is because I feel that I have done sins so I am afraid that whether god will forgive me or not for the mistakes I committed. This might sound very silly to you but I am really scared sir.

Can you please help me in clarifying the doubt? Please donot ignore my mail sir. I know whatever happens is all according to karmas but in the material life people believe in this kind of things so I am scared. Is it really true when we say something or think something & at the same time if the bell rings in the temple whatever we think will come true?

Awaiting your reply.

Committing sins is human weakness. But don't repeat them and brood over them. Pray to the Lord to give you the wisdom and strength to lead a purposeful life. Don't bother about the future birth. Lead this life in a very purposeful way by dedicating yourself to the Lord and serving his children (who are poor and needy) by giving your knowledge, time, love etc.

With prayers,

Question: I like Sri Ramakrishna, Sarada maa and Swamiji verymuch. My goal is god realisation. I dont want to marry. I want to remain as a celibate and try to achieve my goal but i want to do job also. Bcoz i can't leave my parents by joining myself in Sarada math. My mum will not live without me. So i want to live like sannyasini while doing job nd taking care of my parents.B ut my brother asked me who will look after me in my old age. I told him God will take care of me.

I feel so depressd whenever I don't pray god. My mind become so restless if I dont think of God. If I just don't think of God for 2 or 3 days, my mind become so restless and absent minded. I can't relish food, sleep or talking if I don't think of God.

My question is why this is happening to me? Is this a sort of mental weakness? Some times i want to study my subjects that's why i dont think of god. But then mind bcome restless and dull.

One day I said to Sri Ramakrishna that I will offer everything to him whatever I take, wear, or do. I share all my thoughts to him. Bcoz I felt like thakur is with me always. I wanted to offer him everything bcoz I shoudn't forget him any moment. I offered tiffin, meals, coffee evrything. I offerd my mind, soul, life, buddi to Sri Ramakrishna. My mum told me if u think of god somuch u will bcome mad. Then i worried so much and stopped. But I am becoming mad if I don't think of God. I feel like that. It is not by thinking and love God one becomes mad but by thinking of all worldly things they become mad. I try 2 convince my mind by telling this again nd again. But I am worrying that people will think of me mad. Thats why i stoped thinking of God.

Please tell me swamiji, is it wrong to treat God as a friend and or father? My mind filld with love of god and joy when I think of god. Will people think about me mad if i love God so much. But im not able 2 leave my sadhanas for that reason.

Please give me advice.

Answer: Nice to read your mail. After reading your mail we suggest you to surrender to Sri Ramakrishna and Holy Mother. They will surely show the right path to you. You can consider them in any way you like. But whatever you offer to them should be pure and with love. Never forget that they are taking care of you and will guide you in right path.

There are many devotees who relate all the actions of their life and God. You also can follow that way. Whatever you do, think and speak try to relate HIM with that action, thought, and speech. Then you will be in the right path all the time.

Nobody will become mad by thinking the Lord who is the embodiment of all the wisdom and intelligence and goodness. World can't understand the devotees feelings in general. Therefore don't try to show your devotion to others and hide them as the lover hides his/ her love. Don't expect that the world should understand you and appreciate you as a pious one. As long as your love for God is not affecting others, you go on with your way by praying the Lord to give you more and more faith and love towards Him.

Please read the books connected to their divine life. Your love for them will grow more and more. Please visit Sarada Math or our Math and meet sadhus and get guidance from them.

Question: I have daughter named _____ born on july 1st 1998 at 12.20pm and she is the only child some elders told me for good education we should chant shloka 3rd in soundarya lahari for 108 times and to get favour from 9 planets & for the removal of problems created by 9 planets that we have to chant 48th shloka of soundarya lahari , I & my child have made mind to chant 3rd shloka , in her jataka they have told she have problem from shani planet so that she can't concentrate much on studies & she may get bad friends who may cheat her so I want to protect from all these bad things so should I make her to chant both the shlokas please help me swamiji & please guide me for her better future what I should do.

Answer: One fact we have to remember. That is the devotion and sincere prayer to the Lord (in whatever form you like) is more powerful than any planets in the universe.

So, we suggest you to pray to the Divine Mother as a daughter prays. She is Mother of the Universe. She only protects all of us. She knows better than us, how to protect us. So you can chant any Shloka you like with faith and devotion. Please don't bother about the future happenings. All human beings are subject pain and pleasure. Even the Lord comes to this earth (as Rama & Sita) He has to undergo the both pain and pleasures.

So without giving much attention to the predictions and the effects of 9 planets etc. concentrate on your child's welfare by giving your full love and giving the good culture and education to her.

You can bring your child to our Math. Every Sunday (8.30 a.m. - 11 a.m.) we are conducting classes, bhajans etc for girls separately. You can make her to join. No fee.

May the Divine Mother bless you and your children and family members,

Answer: Namaste. We have read your mail. While admiring your noble intention we suggest you to pray to Sri Sarada Devi to shower Her grace on you and to guide you. Also we suggest to read the books connected with the lives of Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada devi & Swamiji.
